AFC Race Etiquette Tips

Running a half marathon is an exhilarating experience. You will be sharing some of San Diego’s most beautiful sights with thousands of other racers. To keep it a positive and safe experience for everyone, we have compiled some etiquette tips to keep in mind on race day. We recommend you:

  1. Stay Within Coned Lanes: The course is designed with coned lanes for a reason. Always stay within these designated areas to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Venturing outside the coned lanes can lead to accidents or disqualification.
  2. Stay to the Right: Just like you would on a trail or path, stay to the right side of the course. This allows faster racers to pass on the left without having to weave through the crowd. Keeping this flow helps everyone maintain their pace and reduces the risk of collisions.
  3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: If you prefer to run with music, consider using only one headphone or keeping the volume low. This way, you can stay aware of announcements, emergency vehicles, and other runners. Being alert helps you respond quickly to any situation on the course.
  4. Proper Disposal of Rubbish: Respect the environment and your fellow runners by disposing of your rubbish correctly. Use the designated bins for trash, recyclables, and organic waste. This small act of responsibility goes a long way in keeping the race area clean and safe for everyone.
  5. Don’t Block the Course: Running with friends can be fun, but be mindful of the course width. Avoid running multiple people abreast in narrow sections. This can create bottlenecks and make it difficult for other runners to pass. Single file running in these areas helps maintain a smooth flow of participants.

By following these race etiquette tips, you’ll contribute to a positive race experience for everyone involved. We are so excited to see all of you on race day!

Here are a couple of reminders:

Join us at the Expo/Packet Pickup on Saturday, August 17th, from 9 AM – 4 PM at The Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. If you can’t make it, you can have someone else pick up your packet if they have a photo of your ID.

Half-marathoners, you must get on one of the buses at Balboa Park between 4 – 5:15 AM to get to the start line at Cabrillo. Remember, your bib is your bus ticket, and the bus is the ONLY way to the start line. If you miss the bus, you will miss the race. Read more about the buses here.

See you at the finish line, racers!!
